I do not go out and protest. I do not phone bank. We do not need to go over why again. I am tremendously grateful to the politicians and advocates who have helped me.
Here are some causes I believe in.
Gay marriage. I have been in a gay marriage. I would get married again. I feel married to my life partner already.
Physics, astronomy, research, and the value of fundamental science.
A modern world with global communications and technological infrastructure, especially with learning and knowledge and software and discussions to improve the world and create further knowledge and teach freely available on the internet (although I did not say all teaching or knowledge or software or technology should be free-- some is not all).
Society should make an effort to prevent people, especially children, but all people, from dying of poverty. I do not inherently have a problem with people being wealthy, but I see it as a problem that some people are that poor and they are not getting help.
People should not hurt each other! This is not something a good god asks for, and why would you worship an evil god? Most of the time, hurting other people is assault or murder, or attempted murder. Excusing this on the basis that they are a "kind of person" or that you do not like or approve of them, does not make you less of a criminal or less evil.
What I do alone in my bedroom or in my bedroom with my adult partner is absolutely none of your business. None. As long as nobody is harmed.
What I do alone in the bathroom is also absolutely none of your business, especially if it falls in the category of ordinary uses of a bathroom (showering, toilet, cleaning, other personal hygiene).
I am legally free to make my medical choices. I should be free to make my medical choices and they should be respected. If I do not consent to a procedure that should be respected. I should not be given procedures I am not told will happen. My medicines should not be swapped with different medicines without permission or being told. Note that this is not even a personal statement about seeking transgender care, since I am not being seen for this and do not get such care outside of the medical industry either.
Trans people, and all people, should have access to basic services and necessities in life. Groceries, pharmacy, medical care especially emergency medical care, but I see no reason specialists like neurology or allergy should be impossible. Medical care should be safe and and make a sincere effort toward helping the patient. There should be no deliberate sabotage. Trans people should have access to transportation and housing.
Trans and gay people should not be physically abused or arrested or taken to the hospital for being trans, or for things that other people would not. The same is true for nonbinary and intersex people, include them in all of the above and below.
There is nothing fundamentally wrong about being LGBTQIA. It is not pedophilias or perversion. There is no reason children or other people need to be kept away from us. I am not even asking people give up their religious beliefs, just have human decency toward other human beings.
Seizures are not a form of demonic possession. Seizures are at least in theory treatable, should someone care to try, and there have been some treatments that have been at least partially successful. They are also not a punishment from god, a moral failing, something I am choosing to do, or me being moody in some way. They are a physical health problem. The same is true of migraines.
Being domestically abused does not make someone a bad person, or mean they deserve it. Men and LGBTQIA people can also be domestically abused, and while I do understand why women's shelters are for women, it is supremely horrifying that the abused person should end up in jail and have their life ruined, when the victim is a man or LGBTQIA person.
There are in fact religious beliefs other than Christianity and Islam, and I should have that right.
Immigrants should be treated kindly and respectfully and be safe provided they respect the law and are here legally. Those who are not here legally should be treated kindly. People should not be rounded up like this, this is unkind, and does not help anything.
We need immigrants to be a better, more intelligent, and more successful society. I have really and truly enjoyed being surrounded by immigrants in academia and think they make the USA better in every way.
I think a global world is important.
I am, to the greatest extent reasonably possible, a pacifist, and would prefer we not dive into unnecessary wars.
I do not want to develop weapons or really anything else for the DOD under anything even vaguely resembling the current circumstances. I would think about it if we were defending Europe from an invasion from Russia, which could happen, and my partner and sisters family were safe. However I would sincerely rather that not come up. It is also possible to totally ruin this willingness by treating trans and gay people or immigrants in general badly enough.
Facts matter. Truth matters. The world is not some imaginary place where just saying something makes it real, and real things didn't happen if nobody can prove them.
Holy shit, there is nothing godly about hurting people. Not in wars, not in medicine, not in dealing with gay or trans people, not in protests. And, for the people getting a 10% in religion class (which I do not teach), you cannot make someone both believe in your god and believe they are a good thing to worship by doing horrible things to them in the name of your god. Basically nobody is willing to worship the ultimate evil.
Clothing, makeup, and body hair laws are absolutely idiotic.
I really don't see how these stupid rules about IDs are supposed to work with people born with X markers on their birth certificates. It should not be illegal to have a legal ID.
I really don't think it makes much sense to try to figure out which court order name changes are invalid. This definitely gets WAY DUMBER the longer you think about it.
It is definitely way into the realm of Nazi Science to force people to nonconsensually have surgery or take gender altering hormones for any reason.
Who the hell is it who keeps suggesting cutting off people's legs to prove a point or for cosmetic reasons!?!?!! That is NOT medicine. That is an extremely sick and twisted vendetta way into the realm of torture murder.
Bonus causes beyond the baseline (Omg this baseline is way too much in danger):
It would be really amazing if trans nonbinary gay people in international relationships who were disabled could legally marry. To be a bit obvious, I have a personal stake in this one.
Disabled people deserve access and accommodations
Disabled people deserve support
Old people deserve accommodations and support
Trans people's names and identities should be respected.
People should have access to educational opportunities regardless of their background or who they are.
Education is fundamentally important for the sake of learning because learning is part of what makes life good.
Education is also important because it helps build the future generation.
Science is fundamentally important because it is part of what makes life good, and returning the results to the public openly and understandably, and internationally, is important for that reason.
International collaboration in science builds success, especially given limited funding for large experiments and niche expertise in fields requiring extensive education at multiple institutions.
Science is also important because it trains and gives results to engineers
Birth control is perfectly fine and sometimes good
Abortion is not "perfectly fine" but it should be legal
There is no good reason women or minorities should not be able to achieve the same things that the majority can, or should be banned from it. Respect and fair consideration is important. As is giving opportunities (although I do not believe this should exclude other people).
I personally should not have to be a woman to succeed.
Denmark and Europe should be, are, and have been our allies... I find disagreement on this point especially in central Minnesota EXTREMELY PUZZLING
