Peace and internationalism-- my partner is Danish. My sister's family is Turkish. My partner also speaks German. I am learning all three of those languages (ranging from badly to extraordinarily badly) and am also trying to refresh some French from high school. As a scientist, I feel that international collaboration is fundamental to education and fundamental research around the world, and that sharing discoveries and teaching the next generation helps everyone build a better future, pass along knowledge, and make use of that knowledge in our society and industries. I also take pure joy in travel and the sharing of cultures when I have the opportunity, although really for individuals it is personal.
Individualism-- people are NOT their group. Each person is his/her/theirself. "All Americans" don't do anything. "All gay people" don't do anything. "All physicists" don't do anything. "All Dorshers" don't do anything. Groups are really helpful, I do identify very strongly as a physicist and a Dorsher, but you can't arrange a marriage for me by starting a war or some dumb shit like that.
LGBTQIA rights-- I am a nonbinary transman and in a gay long term relationship (10 years, 3 in person at the beginning). He is very intensely clearly the love of my life and the man literally of my dreams and I want him and only him and will get really upset about it if you suggest otherwise. I have not sworn an oath of celibacy or anything but I am monogamous, fiercely, and it is a long term relationship. We have not seen each other in person in a very long time. I am not intersex but I have sympathy because I did have a birth defect. I am not on hormones anymore and haven't been since 2011 for medical reasons. I have not had any kind of transman surgery and still have a female body. My ID still has a female gender marker as I was born with. However I support the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, asexual, pansexual, demisexual, and trans people to live their identities and be themselves. And a lot of the other umbrella terms and associated subcultures too, though I want to be clear that LGBTQIA does not encompass pedophelia or bestiality, and I do not support that.
Love-- my partner and family and best friend come before almost anything else.
Science, especially physics and astronomy. Still obsessed. No I did not really leave the field. Hopefully people like my ideas
Forgiveness-- I hate carrying grudges. I really try hard on this one
Generosity-- hahahahahahhaa I want to value this but I don't have much to give, and this is somewhere where I have HUGE regrets about what I have done with my life in the past
Justice? nope, that is not a value
Back to generosity-- I really do believe the poor deserve help from society. I always have. Right now I need some help myself, so this is a bit selfish, but I really do
I am disabled by seizures, and my partner is also disabled. So, I care about healthcare. And my family is also in the field. So there's that.
Programming, obviously
Remind me to give my intersection-of-data-analysis-and-theory manifesto later. I could write a really long article on this, but I don't want to, because it is 3 am, I have three problem sets left in my machine learning certificate class yet tonight, I need to get up at 10:30 am, I didn't sleep much last night, and I have been trolled like crazy this week and am ranting because I am upset.
Unitarian Universalism-- probably
I do believe that most people go to heaven. I do believe in a god. I do not believe he intervenes in basically anything whatsoever. If your computer is broken, definitely do not try praying. Fix it.
The earth is round you idiots.
Education is important. Teaching is really important. Students who put in the effort, whether through tutoring or on their own, usually are trying and are good students, whether or not they succeed in every way. I really respect that.
Research is really important, for its own sake and for the future of our society.
Video games. Definitely video games. MMORPGS. In college, LARPs. Later, board games. At one time, a sci fi and fantasy book club. My best friends sci fi, fantasy, and horror books. Star Trek. A Star Trek RPG in high school.
My partner and I are visibly weird. Live with it.
No I do not want to build your military weapons.
Going to war with the EU and NATO is the stupidest idea I have heard this century. (hashtag Greenland hashtag Denmark for the dimwitted)
